Local Economy
The Community of Kyriaki covers a land of 13 thousands of hectares.
Until the decade of 50s, the income of the residents came from the agriculture, the living stock raising (mainly lambs and goats), the cotton production and the logging. Furthermore, the traditional professions were blooming: the one of saddle-maker, the farrier, the cobbler, the blacksmith (it still exists and, today, a traditional smithy operates as well) and the weaver of the loom.
Though, the incomes were not enough and many residents migrated to America. This happened since 1950 and they then started to be employed to the mines of bauxite that established in this period of time at the region. The unemployment was completely eradicated after the establishment of the company “Aluminium of Greece” in 1960. The company was created in order to develop the bauxite deposit and produce of alumina and aluminium. The industry is established at Aghios Nikolaos of Viotia. Some of the residents were employed in the Corinth Pipeworks in Thisvi.
Moreover, the last years, the agrotourism has been developing in the region and the shops of traditional dairy products, traditional tourist lodgings, traditional taverns and coffee houses has been developed or modernised. The development of the agrotourism in combination with the beautiful natural beauty and the hospitality of the residents are expected to attract many tourists.
