4η itinerary: Kyriaki - Aghia Anna - Thisvi - Thespies - Lefktra - Plataies - Kyriaki Aghia Anna, is a village of Elikonas, covered by firs, which maintains its traditional architecture with the old houses built with stones from Elikonas. Kyriaki is 12 km away from Aghia Anna. The two villages are connected to each other with an asphalt road that passes through a forest of firs. Thisvi is twelve kilometers away from Aghia Anna. In this area, which has been settled since 2000 B.C., the following were found: a chamber- formed grave from the Mycenean period ( 14th- 13th century B.C.), the so called «Treasure of seals» («Thisavros sfragidon»), the fortification Acropolis on the hill Palaiokastro at the north-west of the village, a part of the fortification on the hill Palaiokastro at the south-southwest of the village and on the way to Aghios Ioannis (elevated walls are preserved until today that constituted the ancient site). It is also interesting to refer the curved bridge of the 19th century A.D. on the same road to Aghios Ioannis. The Holy Monastery Makariotissa on an altitude of 700m belongs to Thrisvi as well.
Thespies, Lefktra and Plataies are locations to which many pages of ancient Greek history are dedicated. The ancient city of Thespies was one of the most important cities of Viotia and 700 men from the city took part in the war against the Persian who all were killed at Thermopyles together with the Spartans of Leonidas. Today, some remnants of the ancient city are preserved. The Grove of the Muses also exists at Thespies. Its history begins from the 6th century B.C., but it reached its greatest blooming after the 3rd century B.C., when the «Museia» started to be organized in this place. («Museia» were the celebrations for the 9 Muses) (see also the unit «Myth and History »). The most important monuments that were discovered in the valley of the Muses are: the theatre built for the needs of the music and theatre competitions, the Ionian Stoa with offerings for the Muses, the bases of the statues of the Muses, the small temple or altar of the Muses as well as the square tower of Askra. Thespies are 19 km far from Thisvi and 42 km from Kyriaki.
Lefktra is known from the respective battle in 371 B.C., when the Thebans with Epameinondas fought and won against the Spartans, a fact that led to the end of the Spartan hegemony. The Thebans built a trophy on the battle field. Today, the stone cylindrical base of the trophy is only preserved. Where the ancient city used to be, today, a settlement with 1.065 inhabitants and a large beautiful square is located. On that place, the church of Metamorphosis of Sotiros, dominates (today’s Byzantine temple, cruciform with a dome, built on the same place where the old small one of 1854 existed). Lefktra is 17 km away from Thisvi and 41 km from Kyriaki.
At Plataies, the battle of Plataies took place in 479 B.C. It is regarded as an important event of ancient years, between the Greeks and the Persians, when the last were destroyed and the Persian invasion in Greece ended. The ancient city of Plataies was located near to today’s settlement. The excavations brought into light: the Heraion (a pavilion Doric temple), the Dorm (used as accommodation for the pilgrims of the Heraion), the famous inscription with Diocletian edict (301 A.D.) that regulated the highest prices of selling products. You will reach Plataies after passing 12 km from Lefktra or 53 km from Kyriaki.

Steiri, which is built amphitheatrically on a level of 450 meters, has got its name from the ancient Steirida. The traces of the Acropolis of ancient Steiri are on the hill Boulios, however without any excavations having been practiced systematically. On the hill, there is also a king’s grave hewed in the rock, where Hosios Lukas leas an ascetic’s life and for this reason the area is called Askitario. Every year, the celebration of Hosios Simeon takes place in Steiri on the 1st September. Distomo is 16 km away from Kyriaki. It has an Archeological Museum with exhibits from all the cities of ancient Fokida. A special event of great folkloric importance is the carnival of Distomo, when the custom «Koundounaraioi» which is of Dionysian character, relives. During this, people are dressed with fleece of animals and go around carrying cowbells, in order to «wake up» nature and the beginning of the spring. At a distance of 14 km after Distomo, you will come to Antikyra, where you will see the remnants from the significant culture that has been developed in Antikyra during ancient years and proved by the great number of the archeological findings.
